1. A new day

When I was little, my family and I would always sit around the table for dinner. As we settled down for some delicious home cooking, my mom would ask me "what did you learn today?"

My first response was usually "nothing "

Dad would smile "ah, but you learn something new every day. Think hard and try again."

And I would think, because on this point I knew my parents wouldn't take no for an answer. I would usually say something about school or what my friends were doing. I thought the ritual was annoying at the time, but I remember it fondly now.

Today, I decided that I needed some kind of project. It had been so long since I had settled down to actually writing anything that I feel like I’m losing my skills. So I started this blog, Learn Something New Every Day with me. I promise that I will post something to this blog daily, preferably a whole page about something new I learned that day. The topics will be pretty diverse, as I have a wide range of interests that is growing constantly. I’ll also try not to post anything I have learned already in my 23 year life unless I learn about some new aspect to it. Theoretically by the end of the year, 365+ pages of content will be staring me in the face. It’s an exciting prospect, and I’ll look forward to see what I’ve written over the year, no matter how inane it might be.

This blog isn’t only about jump starting my writing skills. This will help me capture a snapshot of my life, one experience at a time.  As the stupid, popular abbreviation states, you only live once. I should be enriching my life, and finding something precious in each day. I don’t think I appreciate my life enough, so this is my solution. It may not be the best, but it’s what I’ve got so far.

If anyone besides me reads this blog, I will already be flattered. I’m just thinking of it as my own personal exercise/experiment and I’m not expecting attention or feedback. But if you would like to learn, why not come along with me? We can be students of life together.

I’m actually kind of shocked by that last sentence. How do I come up with this sappy stuff? Anyway, thanks for reading.
